All Eyes on Firmoo

I have not had much luck when it comes to prescription glasses. First there was the pair in my early 20’s that looked awful and gave me a headache to boot, and then there was the greedy eye doctor who tried to charge me $300 for a ‘script’ which the assistant let me know was actually for a pair of reading glasses I could get for $20 at the chemist down the road.

Needless to say, I have not had a positive experience with traditional outlets, so when global online optical store, Firmoo, contacted me about their website, I figured I had nothing to lose by giving them a shot.

Placing My Order

At first I was worried that perhaps it would just be a limited selection of jam jars and plain frames, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that they had a large variety of styles to choose from, with new frames added daily.

I honestly spent hours trying to pick a pair that I thought might suit me, simply because I had no idea what would actually look good on me.

Thankfully, the site has a ‘Try On’ feature that allows you to upload a photo and see what the glasses should look like on you, and, assuming you get your measurements right (which I unfortunately did not), it’s actually quite accurate:

Try On feature versus reality.

When it came time to place the order, that’s when things got iffy for me. All I knew about my script was that it should be a +1, but Firmoo needs more than just strength when you’re adding your RX:

Yeah, I have no idea what any of this means…

Much like all optical stores, there are a bunch of add ons that you can also select. With my pair, I chose 1.57 thin and light lenses with anti-reflection& anti-UV coatings, which felt like a no-brainer considering I live in front of a computer all day!

I also came got a decent looking case (Gotta keep these safe from a grabby 11 month old baby who has already destroyed two pairs of sunnies!), repair tools, pouch and cleaning cloth.

So, are they actually any good?

Once I figured out what I needed to to, my glasses arrived here in less than a week, which is amazing when you consider I live in regional Australia! They haven’t gotten caught in my hair (yet) or caused pressure marks on my nose.

The only downside is that I measured my other glasses wrong and so I’ve had comments from a few people that they look too big for my face.

Do these glasses make my head look small?

When I asked my brother’s girlfriend, who works in a Perth based Optometrist what the perks are of ordering glasses through a traditional store instead of online, her concerns mirrored my experience:

The downsides are the fit of the glasses. You can get measurements but they don’t always add up to sitting nicely on your face. So, like the width across the front of the frame can be affected by the width of the nose bridge.

Overall, I would strongly recommend Firmoo to anyone who is on a budget but doesn’t want to compromise style. However, if it’s your first time ordering glasses and you don’t have your prescription or measurements on hand, you might be better off finding a local store that you can trust and then stocking up on awesome, cheap pairs of glasses from Firmoo later on.

* Firmoo were awesome enough to supply me with the glasses for this review, but I’m totally professional and haven’t let that affect my verdict at all.
